Lesson Plan for Parents and Teachers from Senator Craig's Kid's Club http://craig.senate.gov/kidsclub PURPOSE: The purpose of this activity is to give students a chance to learn and understand the history and significance of the United States Flag. OBJECTIVES: Students will know and understand: 1. The purpose of Flag Day. 2. The proper way to display the flag in different instances. 3. The proper way to fold the American flag. 4. The history and significance of the Star-Spangled Banner. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: *5 pointed star--you need a 8 1/2" by 10" (or proportional) piece of paper and scissors *U.S. Flag to fold ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Explain the significance of Flag Day. 2. Have students name all parts of the flag and what each part symbolizes. (i.e. number of stripes, number of stars, and color of stripes) 3. Show overheads or pictures of the proper way to display the flag. 4. Assign students one of the flags of the past and have them find its history (or provide them with it). Then have them present their findings. 5. (Optional) Watch the Star-Spangled Banner movie purchased through the History Channel. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER Was it easy to get the other students to understand your ideas? What were some of the difficulties you faced? 1. Grade students' presentations. 2. Have students make 50 stars and 13 stripes then display the flag in the classroom. 3. Lower or raise the school flag in the evening or morning and properly fold it. Or watch an experienced person fold the flag.

The History Channel and the National Museum of American History have published and distributed more than 120,000 copies of The Star-Spangled Banner Project K-8 Teacher's Manual.
